They had inner vision, purity of thought and ideals,
brotherhood, fear of God and they were also hard
working. The Rajas and the feudals gave them important
positions and status. The Pandalam Raja conferred
on them the title of ‘Panickar’ and
they enjoyed this status. With their knowledge in
fields of Astrology and Mathematics, they naturally
became tutors to the members of the royal family
and were conferred the title ‘Asan’.
They were given respectable positions in the royal
court of Pandalam and were held in high esteem.
In the internecine battle among the feudal lords,
the church at Venmony was burned down. So Christians
of Venmony had to go to the church at Mavelikkara
and this journey was very tedious. The Pardalam
Raja recognized the difficulties faced by his teachers
and other Christians. As a mark of respect to his
teacher, Raja granted them land for building a church
at Venmony and offered financial help for its construction.
He issued orders for this to the members the Pandalam
Royal family who lived near Pillarkadu temple in
Kochukoikal and Valiyakoikal in Venmony. Accordingly
a church in traditional Hindu architecture was built
together with a pond and stone lamps. |
