To
serve the Christians families, carpenters, masons,
blacksmith, barbers, tailors etc. were also settled
nearby. The present St. Mary’s Orthodox Church
(Valiapally) is located at this site.
When the course of Achenkovil river was diverted
in the 18th century via Vettiyar by Marthanda
Varma Maharaja, the location of the house happened
to be on the eastern bank of the river and thereafter
our family came to be known as Attupurathu. This
happened during the 10th generation. As the church
and main centresof activity were on the western
side of the river, with a view to obviate the
inconvenience in attending church and other activities,
our forefather of 11th generation shifted his
residence to ‘Mundankavu’ (presently
comprising of Attupurathu thundathil, Pattathil,
Kallamonthara, Attupurathu Vadakkethil, Attupurathu
Kizhakkethil, Attupurathu Pallathu, Attupurathu
Kottal and surrounding lands.) The house name
was retained as Attupurathu. At this stage a unique
but amusing incident that happened (in the 18th
century) is worth mentioning, which will suffice
to illustrate the position of our ancestors enjoyed
in the society. |
