It cannot be disputed
that St.Thomas the discile of Jesus Christ, came to Kerala
in AD 52, to preach the gospel. In his sojourn he went,
among other places, to Nilakal which was thickly populated
at that time and preached the gospel. Many, both upper
and lower caste Hindus embraced Christian faith. He founded
a church also there. By AD 325 about 3000 christians left
Nilakal and many settled in Kadambanad. By the end of
the century, they estaqblished a church at Kadambanad.
The family that was living next to the church got the
name Pallivathukkal. As the Pallivathukkal Kudumbam grew
in size, many dispersed to places in and around Kadambanadu.
One unit settled at “Thazhe” in Kadambanad.
Over centuries many members of the Thazhe family further
migrated and settled in places like Thumpamom, Mavelikkara,
Pynummoodu, Elanthoor, Venmony etc. Probably there were
two reasons for this migration;in the first place the
internal troubles and dissensions existed at that time.
Secondly an urge to seek more lucrative ways of living.
It was in the 16th century that Kurikes Geevarghese of
Thazhe Kuddumbam with his family traveled north and with
the permiosssion of Panadalam Raja, settled down at Pulimukham
near Utthappally in Venmony. They named their house also
Thazhe. The genesis of Attupurathu Kudumbam is reckoned
from the said Kurikes Geevarghese. |
